How are ranked-choice ballots counted?
When counting begins, if a candidate gets more than 50% of 1st-choice votes, they win.
Otherwise, ballots are counted in rounds until a candidate has a majority (>50%).
Rounds
Each round, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated.
If your highest-ranked candidate is eliminated, your vote goes to the next highest-ranked candidate on your ballot.
This process continues until one candidate has a majority.
Round 0: In very small elections, candidates with zero 1st-choice votes are eliminated before ranked-choice rounds begin.
Ties: If two or more candidates are tied for elimination in any round, the tie is broken by comparing the number of 2nd-choice votes for each tied candidate. If a tie still remains, 3rd-choice votes are compared, then 4th-choice votes, then 5th-choice votes.
